Orthodontic Expander Services
Orthodontic expanders are specialized appliances used to widen the upper jaw (palate) to create more space for teeth alignment and improve bite function. They are commonly recommended for children and teens as part of early orthodontic treatment, but may also be used for adults in certain cases.
What Is an Expander?
An expander is a custom-made device that gradually widens the upper jaw by applying gentle pressure over time. This process helps:
- Correct crossbites and other bite issues
- Create space for crowded teeth
- Improve breathing by opening nasal passages
- Support proper jaw development
Types of Expanders We Offer
We offer several types of expanders tailored to your specific orthodontic needs:
- Palatal expander: Fixed to the upper molars and activated with a small key to widen the jaw
- Removable expander: Used for minor expansion and easier cleaning
- Mini-screw expander (MSE): Designed for older teens and adults, anchored with small screws for skeletal expansion
Your orthodontist will recommend the most appropriate type based on your age, jaw structure, and treatment goals.
How Expanders Work
Expanders work by gently separating the bones of the upper jaw, which are not yet fused in younger patients. The process typically involves:
- Activation: Turning the expander with a key once or twice daily as instructed
- Monitoring: Regular checkups to track progress and ensure comfort
- Retention: After expansion, a retainer may be used to stabilize the new jaw width
Treatment duration varies but usually lasts a few weeks to a few months.
Care and Maintenance
Proper care is essential to keep your expander clean and effective:
- Brush thoroughly around the appliance after meals
- Use a water flosser or rinse to remove food debris
- Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can damage the device
- Follow activation instructions carefully
What to Expect
- Speech and eating changes: Temporary adjustments are normal as you get used to the appliance
- Mild discomfort: Some pressure or soreness may occur during activation
- Gap between front teeth: This is a common and expected sign that the expander is working
